Branding

Logos

Logo: The core identifier of an organization and the foundation for the narrative on which the brand is built. It is the most consistent component in an organization’s communications.

Promo mark: A temporary, event- or initiative-specific graphic used to promote a program, campaign, or activity. Unlike a logo, a promo mark is not a core brand identifier and does not represent the organization as a whole.

Simply put:
A promo mark is for an event, program or campaign hosted by an organization that already has a logo. It should never replace that logo. Any materials produced by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) or UGA Cooperative Extension using a promo mark must also include the affiliated logo so the audience can see clearly who is behind the event.

The CAES logo is the strongest visible representation of the college. It is the face of the college and its use should be consistent across all media.

Public-facing Logo UGA College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences

This is our default logo. In all possible instances, the horizontal, college-first configuration is preferred.

Secondary Logo UGA College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences

When the horizontal format is not ideal for the space, the vertical configuration is the correct logo.

Extension logos

The UGA Extension logo was created by UGA Trademarks as a unique logo within the UGA brand to meet the needs of the college’s public outreach mission area. The primary Extension logo is the best and clearest logo to use to foster increased public awareness of our vital programming.

When the horizontal format is not ideal for the space, the vertical configuration is the correct logo.

Unit logos

We increase public recognition of the college by consistently using the primary logos. Whenever possible, those should be the default for branding materials. For instances where a unit-specific logo is necessary, UGA Trademarks has provided options for all CAES sub-units.

Requesting official logos

Official Unit logos

Official unit logos are created by the UGA Trademarks Office. Per UGA policy, logo requests must be routed through the college or unit’s logo liaison. To request an official logo, fill out the OMC project request form.

Logo configuration options are preset by the UGA Trademark Office and are based on the type of unit requesting a logo. You can learn more about the logo configurations available to unit types at the central UGA brand site.

Student Groups

Student organizations must be officially registered with Student Affairs. A student group’s access to university trademarks is determined by the group’s status as determined by Student Affiars. See the Student Affairs trademark approval process.

Consistent presentation is vital in strengthening a brand’s recognizability and impact. Any modification to official logos is therefore prohibited.

  • Do not distort.
  • Do not alter colors.
  • Do not move any part of the logo.
  • Do not rotate.
  • Do not use the arch-shield icon alone. Keeping the icon and wordmark together strengthens recognizability.
  • Do not place the logo on inaccessible backgrounds. Use a different color variation of the logo or choose a different background image.
  • Do not add a drop shadow or outline.
  • Do not substitute any alternate typography for the wordmark.
  • Do not alter the icon-to-wordmark proportion.
  • Avoid placing the logo on rival colors.
  • Do not remove the white holding shape.
  • Do not use any logo made before 2022.
  • Confirm you are using the proper trademark symbol. The ™ is now outdated — the correct logos use the registered trademark symbol ®.

Minimum size

Be conscious of the logo’s legibility. When the height of the arch-shield icon is under a half-inch (print) or 36 pixels (digital), remove the 1785 date. The minimum height of the icon is 0.375″ (print) or 27 pixels (digital).

Clear space

Do not place graphics or text in the logos’ immediate vicinity. Use the “G” in the university logos or the “E” in Extension logos as a guide for minimum clear space on all sides. This is a minimum distance — more is better!

For additional guidance, please see the complete UGA Brand Guidelines.

Clear space protects the integrity of logos. When text or other graphics are placed too closely to a logo, it becomes difficult to recognize what is part of the logo and what is not. Over time, such misuse weakens the recognizability of the logo and the entity it represents. If, for example, a non-university entity’s name is placed too closely to the university logo on an event advertisement, the viewer can mistake the outside entity as part of the university instead of as a separate partner.

Color variations

All UGA logos come in four color variations to allow adaptability based on the background color. Our logos should default to the full color or full color with white text when needed. For more guidance, visit brand.uga.edu/logos.

For materials that require only one color, use the white (1C) logo on a dark background or reverse it to black for a light background. White and color-white are recommended for clear backgrounds. Black and white (BW) and one-color (1C) logos may be used for embossing and debossing. No other color variations are permissible.

Internal

When several entities within the university equally share affiliation with a program or event, list the entities alphabetically, either underneath the university logo or on its right side. When one entity is the major sponsor, use its logo instead of the university logo. List all other affiliated entities alphabetically.

To have an internal lockup configuration made for you, fill out the OMC project request form.

Examples of the internal co-brand text layouts

External

When a university entity works with affiliated yet independent entities or with outside partners, multiple logos may need to be displayed. The “I-Bar,” a graphic element of the university brand, can be used to separate the logos. If an event is sponsored by UGA, our logo should be first (left or top). If there are more than three logos, no I-Bar is needed between each one.

We commonly need to pair the UGA Extension logo in a lockup with the 4-H logo. This lockup should be used exclusively when referring to Extension programs that are in partnership with the 4-H program. 4-H logos are not the property of UGA. Merchandise featuring only the 4-H logo, without the UGA Extension logo, do not need UGA Trademarks approval.

Embroidery

Embroidery is a unique medium that requires special attention to sizing. Department-level logos can be difficult to embroider due to the small lettering involved. If the department name is illegible due to its size, use the affiliated top-level logo and embroider the department name separately in Trade Gothic Bold No. 20 or Oswald Medium.

Include enough clearance space (the width of the “G” in the formal logo or the height of the two lines in the horizontal logo) between the name and the logo. The embroidered text must align with the text in the logo and not appear below the shield. Proportional scaling is always required. If the width of the wordmark is less than 2.75″ then do not include the date. The minimum size a logo can be embroidered is 1.5″ wide or 2.5″ wide for the wordmark without the shield. Heat transfer is discouraged.
